"Livestock Improvement Corporation Ltd (trading as LIC) is
a dairy farmer owned co-operative providing a wide range of whole farm and
food improvement solutions to the dairy, beef, deer and other livestock
farming sectors. LIC's head office is at Newstead in Hamilton with
regional bases around New Zealand, branches in Australia, UK and Ireland
plus agencies in South America, United States, Asia and South Africa. The
company's origins trace back to the early 1900s. It has evolved through a
number of structures, eventually becoming a 100% user owned co-operative
under the Dairy Industry Restructuring Act 2001. On 16 April 2004 a dual
share structure was introduced with two classes of shares - a Co-operative
Control Share held in proportion to patronage and an Investment Share
which is tradable among co-operative control shareholders."
