Guoco Leisure Limited
Description: In the late 1980s, BIL began to realign its strategy by focusing on a smaller number of assets with a core of trading subsidiaries and associated companies. The Asian economic crisis in 1997/98 led the Board to initiate a review of the corporate philosophy and investment strategy. This resulted in the disposal of a number of non-performing investments, the reduction of bank debt and the replacement of the senior management team led by the appointment of Mr Greg Terry as Chief Executive Officer in November 1999. 2000 represented a significant milestone for BIL as the company shifted its primary stock exchange listing from New Zealand to Singapore and its new management team set about to restructure the company’s investment portfolio. In March 2001, on the 40th anniversary of BIL’s founding, Sir Ron Brierley retired from the Board of Directors of BIL. He remains Founder President, which is an appointment for life. Two new non-executive directors, namely Messrs Kwek Leng San and Reggie Thein were appointed. In July 2001, another non-executive director, Mr Paul Selway Swift joined the BIL Board. 0n 30 September 2001, Tan Sri Quek Leng Chan became the new Chairman when Sir Selwyn Cushing, who stepped aside as Chairman in May, retired. Hon Philip Burdon was appointed as the Deputy Chairman on 1 November 2001. On 2 February 2002, Mr Tan Soo Nan, Chief Executive Officer of Temasek Capital (Private) Limited replaced Mr Quek Poh Huat as non-executive Director. On 31 March 2002, Mr Greg Terry stepped down as CEO and remained on the BIL Board as a non-executive director until July 2002. On 1 April 2002, Mr Arun Amarsi was appointed Group Managing Director. On 11 Nov 2002, Mr Tan Soo Nan resigned as non-executive director. In March 2003, BIL announced a General Offer for the remaining shares in Thistle that it did not own. The General Offer was successful as control over Thistle was achieved in May 2003. Thistle was ultimately privatised and delisted in July 2003. On 30 June 2003, Mr Paul Selway-Swift resigned as non-executive director. On 16 February 2005, Mr Wong Kok Siew, a non-executive director, passed away. On 1 May 2005, Mr Tang Kin Fei was appointed as a non-executive and non-independent director. On 17 May 2005, Mr Kwek Leng San resigned as non-executive director of BIL and Member of the Audit and Risk Management Committee while Mr Kwek Leng Hai was appointed as a non-executive director of BIL and non-independent Member of the Audit and Risk Management Committee. On 31 May 2007, Mr Arun Amarsi retired as Group Chief Executive Officer and with effect from 1 June 2007, Chairman of the Board, Tan Sri Quek Leng Chan, will assume the role of Executive Chairman of BIL."
