Finance receivables grew from $937,319 to $2,568,638 during the year and the finance company, Budget Loans Ltd, is making a good contribution to Group results.Lending levels have fluctuated during the year and we have had to be careful to maintain the quality of the finance book in the face of some extreme competitive factors in the new loans market. The new year is expected to be just as competitive and we intend to keep our finance operations quite low geared so that we reduce as much as possible any reliance on borrowed funds. We run a separate finance broking operation through Cynotech Corporation and this division provides the marketing program for Budget Loans as well as the broking of loans to other financial institutions. Finance broking has been successful this year in a very competitive marketing environment.Manufacturing - Merlin Foods Ltd
The acquisition of Merlin Foods Ltd was successfully completed during May 2005. Since acquisition Merlin has made a very positive contribution to Group profit results. The Company has a large market share in the sector in which it operates and we are looking to add new products to give us a wider mix of products to promote through our distribution chain. Like all NZ manufacturers, Merlin is caught in a squeeze between its inability to make any significant price rises in the sale price of its product while on the other side of the equation being hit with continual increases in the costs of fuel, gas, electricity and the costs of employment. We are optimistic for this year and we should produce another good result from manufacturing operations but cost increases in manufacturing inputs will need very close monitoring and control.Satellite phones - Cynotech Systems Ltd
Satellite turned in a stable performance during the year. Results for Satellite are consistent from one financial period to another and because of the small size of the NZ market there is not much opportunity for growth without extending our activities outside the narrow satellite phone sector."
